Every character has its own pizza and every pizza its own character: this is one of the few certainties of Manolo Moretti, former superintendent of the penitentiary police and now pizza chef at Gradisca in Galatea a Mare, in Romagna. Moretti quickly understands whether the person in front of him is a down-to-earth type who likes Prosciutto e funghi, an exaggerated Doppio salami piccante or a refined Bufala con basilico. But not even his boss Vittor Malpezzi - who, ironically, is a former criminal - will ever be able to convince him to make a pizza with pineapple on top. Despite the bickering between Moretti and Malpezzi about tropical fruit, things at the pizzeria are going swimmingly until, on the very evening that the waitress Channèl, a true crime enthusiast, has taken vacation, something exceptional happens: death peeps out between the tables at Gradisca and the carabinieri have to open an investigation. In the sweet air of Romagna at the end of summer, a crime is as fitting as pineapple on pizza: it is a foreign body, disturbing, incomprehensible. But it is not the case for everyone: Channèl, for example, is enthusiastic about finally being able to deal with a real crime. And for Moretti, who has a past full of secrets and a singular inability to stay out of trouble, it could be the occasion to admit that the place behind the pizza oven is a hiding place from which he must find the courage to emerge. The pineapple is not the birth certificate of a new detective who is more unlikely than ever and yet full of the profound humanity of someone who handles the dough that we humans are made of every day.
