Os malaquias
Description:
Nico, Júlia and Antônio lose their parents in a tragic way: lightning strikes and burns down the modest house of the Malaquias family. The three children, survivors of the disaster and abandoned to their fate, follow different paths. The oldest boy goes to work on a large estate; the girl is adopted and taken to another city; the youngest is taken in by an orphanage. In the remote Sierra Morena, however, the day will come when the siblings will seek the longed-for reunion. In this novel, Andréa del Fuego is inspired by an episode from her family history — her great-grandparents were struck by lightning — and, at the same time, draws on an ancestral literary imagination. Unusual characters parade before the reader — from French nuns to baby traffickers, from the spirits of ancestors to people who disappear in the steam of a boiling teapot —, protagonists of a mesmerizing plot, halfway between reality and fantasy. The Malaquias is a poignant tribute to identity rural, to fraternal love, to memory and to literature itself as a fable
