Description:

Throughout his career, poet Nouri al-Jarrah has presented a counter-narrative poetry that represents the self in its true form, transposing the Syrian tragedy to the ranks of major human tragedies. His poetic texts open up to the human heritage developed by the concept of exile, while engaging with the effectiveness of symbols and references to history, religion, and myth. He also sought to restore the civilizational role of the East in human civilization, shaping lost identities and rebuilding them, free from historical processes of misidentification. The selections in this book attempt to represent the stages of Nouri al-Jarrah's poetry, without neglecting his early poetic productions. The title, "The Tablets of Orpheus," refers us to the general content of al-Jarrah's poems. Orpheus, the legendary figure from Greek mythology, is a musician and writer known for his seafaring voyages and supernatural magical abilities, which attracted everyone to his melodies. From here, he can be considered the appropriate face of Nouri al-Jarrah, through whom he unites with his ego within the poetic text and points to the possibility of Orpheus's experience interacting and intertwining with his own. Although the title is derived from one of the poet's poems in his collection Hamlet's Gardens, it does not refer to that poem, but rather to the experience of a contemporary Orpheus who plays a stringless lyre, thus alluding to the state of fragmentation ensured by the spirit of myth and the constant search for self and existence
