Description:
This novel takes place on the margins of the Syrian war, specifically in the coastal city of Latakia. There, Alia lives an ordinary life, outside the straight paths people follow to achieve their goals. She meets Lukas, a young Russian man working as a fighter pilot at the Hmeimim airbase after abandoning his dream of becoming a chess player. Badi', however, hasn't given up on his dream; he has become a stage actor in his own way, living his daily life as if on a stage that only he can see. Rahim Hassawi doesn't write about grand events or city centers, nor about lives suited to heroic narratives. He only writes about grand events when they seep into people's daily lives like faint echoes, or when they leave a vast emptiness that devours cities and shrinks their space to the size of a house. In this novel, we read about faces worn down by boredom and loneliness, about desires people thought had been extinguished forever, and about play as a primary human drive from birth. The events of this story take place on the margins of the Syrian war, specifically in coastal Latakia. There, Aliaa lives a normal life, far removed from the straightforward plans people follow to achieve certain objectives. She meets Lucas, a young Russian man working as a fighter pilot at the Hmeimim military base after giving up his dream of becoming a chess player. Badii, however, didn't give up on his dream; instead, he became a stage actor in his own way, leading a day-to-day life as if he were standing on a stage visible only to him. Rahim Hassawi doesn't write about major events or city hubs, nor does he write about those whose lives make up heroic stories. He only writes about major events when they creep into the daily lives of people like low echoes, or when they leave behind a wide gap consuming cities and limit their space as they become as small as a house. In this story, we read about the worn-out faces from boredom and loneliness, about desires that were thought extinguished for good by their holders and about playing as man's first motive since birth
