Description:
Doria, from a Christian family—her father of Greek origin and her mother from a Christian family from Aleppo—recounts her and her family's displacement from Antioch to Alexandretta, and then their subsequent displacement from Alexandretta to Aleppo to live with her mother's family. These events took place in 1955 during the riots known as the Istanbul Pogrom. In parallel, Elie, the novel's protagonist, narrates his life story and upbringing in the port city of Tripoli in northern Lebanon. He comes from a poor family and, like his father, is a communist. However, Elie undergoes intellectual trials and tribulations that lead him to study theology in Athens, eventually becoming a priest in Berlin. It is an engaging novel with numerous events that take place in various locations
