Description:

This book portrays Katayama Satoshi, a key figure in the Showa era who was feared by Yoshida Shigeru and beloved by MacArthur. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Showa era and the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, and a hidden key figure in Showa history is attracting attention. This is the first nonfiction portrayal of the life of Katayama Satoshi (the 46th Prime Minister), who served as Prime Minister from June 1947 to February 1948, shortly after the war. Katayama, the first Prime Minister elected by the Diet after the enactment of the Japanese Constitution, was the first Socialist Party member and Christian prime minister in Japanese political history. He steadily advanced Japan's democratization under the occupation, but due to his short tenure, he has received little attention until now. During his time in office, he was even given the unfortunate nickname "Loozy Satoshi." However, this book was written to reexamine his achievements within the context of Showa history. The Katayama Cabinet, which protected Japan's sovereignty despite being under the control of GHQ, implemented a series of democratic reforms, and rebuilt the country as a peaceful nation, left a profound impact on modern Japan. Had Katayama steered the ship wrong, Japan might have become the 51st state of the United States or become communist under Soviet control. Furthermore, Katayama's political stance, which focused on purifying the political world as a lifelong theme alongside his campaign to protect the Constitution, offers much that we can learn from today. This book is a revised and expanded version of a full-length novel serialized by the author in the Kii Minpo newspaper in Katayama's hometown of Wakayama Prefecture from last year to this year. Based on historical facts, the novel vividly portrays Katayama's thoughts and actions as "wise decisions," and throughout the serialization period, the author received calls for publication. It is our hope that this publication will shed new light on the footsteps of this great man, lost to history. Table of Contents Prologue Chapter 1: White Sand and Crosses Chapter 2: Masters and Comrades Chapter 3: Struggle and Setbacks Chapter 4: Rising from the Ruins Chapter 5: A Government in Difficulty Chapter 6: Ideals and Trials Chapter 7: The Collapse of the Cabinet Chapter 8: The Foolish Legacy Epilogue
