Au couchant, l'espérance
Description:
On August 12, 1912, forced into exile by the French, Sultan Moulay Abd el-Hafid announced his abdication, stating that 'his health no longer allowed him to assume the responsibilities of power.' He destroyed the sacred symbols he had inherited from his predecessors: the parasol carried over his head during official ceremonies was burned, and the litter was torn to pieces. It was the future Marshal of France, Hubert Lyautey, who escorted him aboard the cruiser Du Chayla bound for Marseille. After the customary twenty-one-gun salute, the cruiser cast off. Lyautey remounted and declared to his officers: 'There we are. And now we will go to Morocco.'" Thus begins this epic saga, which will last nearly half a century, marked by moments of light and darkness. Lyautey, Churchill, Roosevelt, Abd el-Krim, the future Mohammed V, father of independence, are all historical figures who will intersect with the destinies of men and women, witnesses or victims of the upheavals of history
