Crónica de la lumbre / Chronicle of the Fire
Description:
Who lives the other half of our lives?” Narsia, a 58-year-old theater professor, answers her youngest son's call with her ex-husband. It is February 2000. The young man confesses to his parents that a week earlier he murdered his girlfriend. He hasn't called them here, however, hoping for help, but so they can witness him jumping from the tenth floor. With a broken heart, Narsia resumes her life in her hometown in Sinaloa. Nine years later, she meets Arsenio, a journalist who has lost his way. The mother of his daughter, with whom he had a hostile relationship after their separation, was killed in a shooting, and since then he has been grappling with his own fatherhood and the constant search for new love. Despite their differences, a true friendship soon blossoms between Narsia and Arsenio: the theater teacher's singular wisdom becomes an unexpected beacon for Arsenio. But Narsia suffers from a serious heart condition. Although it is treatable with surgery, she does not want to spend another anniversary of her son's death on this earth. The lives of the characters intersect here—brushing against each other or becoming fatally entangled—in a monumental and meticulously crafted narrative structure. Geney Beltrán reflects lucidly on the intimacy of violence and the familial wounds that shape us, on the arduous love for one's children and the impossibility of other loves. These pages are a chronicle of the fire that consumes everything. And also of that other fire that illuminates.
