This polyphonic novel tells the story of Henry Lloyd, a mysterious character who gradually builds an empire in the mid-19th century. Daring, shrewd, and intelligent, the only person he fears is his nemesis, Jack Barley, the only one who can bring down his empire. Jack Barley is an eleven-year-old boy who, in self-defense, kills a boy from his village and then his family, forcing him to flee before the authorities capture and hang him. The stories of Henry Lloyd and Jack Barley run parallel until their inevitable intersection. The Man narrates the perspectives of other characters who accompany Henry. James, a boy kidnapped from his village in Africa and taken to the United States as a slave, eventually becomes one of Lloyd's trusted men. Jeremiah, a giant of a Black man who refuses to speak the language of the slave owners, leading white people to believe he is mute and stupid. Virginia, the heiress to a vast plantation in Alabama, marries Lloyd, only to be forced to separate from him for painful reasons. Rodrigo, a young Mexican man living on a ranch in Texas, witnesses the blurring of the border between Mexico and the United States. The novel traces the immense fortune amassed by Henry Lloyd to his present-day descendants, who gradually uncover the dark past of their ancestors.
