Description:
A peninsula in the North Frisian Wadden Sea. Here, by the North Sea, Annett--in her late forties--has lived for many years; here, following the early death of her husband, she raised her daughter, Linn, alone. Linn--in her mid-twenties--left home full of energy after graduating from high school to explore the world; she volunteered in the forests of Sweden and Romania and currently works for a reforestation project. To Annett, her daughter embodies hope, purpose, and the future. Yet one day, at a conference, Linn collapses during a lecture--a circulatory breakdown brought on by sheer exhaustion. Annett brings her home for a week--to the sea, near Husum. One week turns into two, then three, and eventually months. Ground down between the pressures of high performance and a quest for meaning, Linn seems to have reached a breaking point in her mid-twenties. Annett feels helpless in the face of her daughter's listlessness. As time passes, conflicts erupt--not only between mother and daughter, but between two generations. Each must learn to understand the other's reality anew. With a keen sensitivity to interpersonal dynamics, Kristine Bilkau explores the pressing questions of our time: the question of the older generation's responsibility for the state of the world, and the younger generation's desire to infuse their own lives with meaning.
