Spielbeginn
Description:
A twelve-member theater troupe explores the possibilities of theater on stage. They breathe, sniff, swallow, and blow; they play with their voices and range of movement; then they begin to speak, and later, even sing. A narrator figure is also on stage, commenting on the action and issuing brief instructions, yet the actors also intervene with improvisations, constantly giving rise to new questions and surprising situations—by turns comical and menacing. In a second part, Anton records observations made during a trip around Lake Constance with his fellow actor Oskar. Both marvel at the variations in pronunciation, intonation, and pace across different regions; they also attempt to tune in to the languages spoken by travelers and migrants, allowing foreign tongues to play a part as well. In *Spielbeginn*, Zsuzsanna Gahse writes about language—its sonic diversity, its ability to constantly adapt to new times and circumstances, and the inexhaustible archive embedded within every language. And, in the process, she demonstrates how modern theater can be both narrative and dramatic.
