Description:
Set in an unnamed African country, the story is narrated by Salim, a young adult son of Indian traders long established on that stretch of coast. He believes that the world is what it is and that anyone who is not someone has no place in it. He decides to abandon the coastal strip and becomes the owner of his own store in a small, growing town, in the most remote interior of the continent. This place, this «bend in the river», however, is a microcosm of post-colonial Africa at the moment of its independence: a scene of chaos, change, violence, tribal wars, ignorance, isolation and poverty.
