The delicate link between past and future is the common thread of the six texts in this unpublished collection by Vinícius Neves Mariano, author of Too Old to Die , a finalist for the Jabuti Award. In The Skin in Bloom , Vinícius Neves Mariano leads his characters through trajectories from which they emerge with a new consciousness, ready to blossom towards a new future. In the opening story of the volume, Vinícius — the narrator who is confused with the writer — witnesses in the café of a bookstore a black employee being humiliated because she made a mistake with the request. Perplexed, he listens to his friend Henrique, who is also present at the scene, explain what happened as a symptom of a disease: the "evil of the lord". Vinícius then decides to investigate this serious malady that, like the narrative of the tale, intertwines reality and fabulation. In "Fawohodie", a brilliant and provocative retelling of Borges' Aleph, Mariano questions not only what is worthy of the literary canon, but who can occupy this position and what themes are pertinent in the so-called "high literature". Cultural and symbolic traditions and heritages are the key for the characters of The Skin in Bloom to understand their emotions and build their place in the world. In the search for their own individuality, they find resonance in the collective. "Vinícius Neves Mariano's narratives are haunted by the past. The texts of The Skin in Bloom are populated by people who are looking for their place in the world, sharing a common denominator: the color of their skin. This is what configures them racially, determining which (restricted) spaces they can occupy and which (narrow) paths they can take in the labyrinthine Brazilian society.
