Description:

A literary, social, and emotional history of Brazil's cultural scene – focusing on Manuel Bandeira and his affections. The Curvelo Trio is one of those prodigies of the articulation between literary criticism, emotional chronicle, and cultural journalism that, with great luck, appear every one or two generations. Awarded in 1995 by the PEN Club as best essay and now reissued with two new essays dealing with the presence of two women in the life and work of Manuel Bandeira, the book takes as its starting point a chronicle by the Carnival poet about a group of mischievous boys from Santa Teresa, in Rio, to expand its limits and retrace a narrative of delightful coincidences between a trio that marked Brazilian culture. For it was there, in that neighborhood nestled between steep streets, alleys, and breathtaking panoramas of Guanabara Bay, that three great personalities would meet in the first half of the 20th century. Manuel Bandeira occupied house number 51 on Rua do Curvelo; Nise da Silveira lived across the street from the poet; And Ribeiro Couto also had his room there; in Dona Sara's boarding house. Rio was then the Federal Capital; a city that was modernizing by leaps and bounds; but which also still preserved bucolic and almost rural areas; where Bandeira, Nise, and Ribeiro Couto would bump elbows while helping to transform the intellectual landscape. As fortuitous as it may seem (and it is); this synchronicity of such distinct personalities and talents helps Elvia to construct—through poems, letters, chronicles, and reminiscences—a kind of collective biography with Bandeira as its radiating center. But also, at a certain point, the author asks for space and recalls her own relationship, decades later, with Nise, already an almost legendary figure in our sciences. For this is, as its subtitle already states, a story of affections.
