In the case of Guimarães Rosa, we find a master of undeniable literary power, but "infertile" when it comes to influencing other authors. Graciliano Ramos is approached as an anti-modernist par excellence and caught during the writing of the novel São Bernardo, a classic that was (in his words) "translated into a troubled Brazilian, very different from the one that appears in our books." We still have the struggle to include Lima Barreto in the literary canon and the silence surrounding Rosário Fusco, an author from Minas Gerais somewhere between Dostoevsky and Kafka of the tropics. And the writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida is rediscovered as one of the most unjustly overlooked voices in our literary tradition. These stories, lived on the margins or in the shadows, gain even more strength thanks to the originality of Ruffato's writing, which, as critic Pedro Meira Monteiro points out in the preface, carries "an air of loose prose" over the not always clear landscape of our literature.
