The Night Watchman” tells the story of the quiet determination, family bonds, and survival skills of the Chippewa people. It draws inspiration from the letters and memories of the author's grandfather, Thomas Wazhashk, who led the community in resisting the 1953 Termination Bill (a U.S. government policy aimed at ending the recognition of indigenous tribes and treaties with them). Thomas was an ordinary, part-time night watchman who also served as a tribal leader. He wrote letters, campaigned within the community, and even went to Congress – conveying a message about the right to exist and the sovereignty of their land
