"Viktor Astafyev (1924-2001) was a Russian Soviet writer, playwright, and screenwriter. He authored such well-known works as *Cursed and Killed*, *The Shepherd and the Shepherdess*, *The Horse with the Pink Mane*, and *Vasyutka's Lake*. *A Sad Detective Story* is a realistic novel about the Perestroika era, published in 1986. Leonid Soshnin, a police officer, is forced into disability retirement following injuries sustained in the line of duty. After yet another quarrel, his wife, Lerka, leaves him, taking their young daughter with her. Left alone, the protagonist reflects on episodes from his grueling job and his own life mistakes, pondering the causes of the rampant crime, alcoholism, and brutality in Soviet society. The collection also includes short stories about the lives of the post-war generation: 'An Anxious Dream,' 'Take It and Remember,' 'On a Clear Day,' 'Living a Life,' 'Born of Me,' and 'The Passing Goose.'"
