Description:
"Yakov Kalinovich, a Moscow University graduate, is appointed superintendent of a school in a provincial town. There, he strikes up a friendship with Nastenka, the daughter of the previous superintendent. The intelligent and sensitive young woman falls deeply in love with Yakov, and he, too, harbors tender feelings for her. Yet the ambitious Kalinovich dreams above all of a life of comfort and a brilliant career. Consequently, the daughter of General's widow Shevalova--heiress to the largest fortune in the province--seems to him a far more advantageous match. The collection also includes the drama *A Bitter Fate*--considered "one of the best Russian plays"--which tells the story of the hard life of an ordinary serf who pays quit-rent, whose wife begins an affair with the local landowner while her husband is away."
