Description:
Imagine discovering that everything you know about your childhood is a lie. This is what happens to Maia: raised by adoptive parents who showered her with love, she never asked many questions about her origins—in fact, she never wanted to know anything at all. But now, pregnant and determined to protect the future of the child she is carrying, Maia needs to uncover her past. In the attic of her home sits a trunk she had always avoided opening; now, however, she decides to look inside. She finds scribbled notes, newspaper clippings, and a few photographs—the first clues she must piece together, the fragments of the vast puzzle that is her childhood. Some doors, once opened, can never be closed again. The documents leave no room for doubt: she must leave. Without asking anyone’s permission, she sets off for Trentino-Alto Adige. There, she gradually reconstructs her own history—the story of her mother, and of the women and children with whom she once lived, held captive on a farm hidden deep in the mountains. Maia believes she is searching for her past, but she is mistaken: it is the past that is searching for her, calling out to her insistently. And so, she learns that not all families are as safe and loving as the one in which she was raised; some may harbor dark and dangerous secrets.
