Il paese dei matti
Description:
The Emilia lowlands, May 1944. Young Gianna, along with her brother Carlo and sister Adriana, leaves the city--made dangerous by air raids--to evacuate with her family to a village that, to the little girl's eyes, seems dominated by a fairytale castle. In reality, the building is a vast asylum; one day, Gianna sees a coffin leaving, escorted only by the old parish priest, and--moved by compassion--she joins the procession, baffling the villagers, for when the "mad" die, no one usually accompanies them to their final rest. This marks the beginning of a bond between the girl and that strange place--the castle-asylum-- which small toys reach her from: fragile gifts crafted by a man confined within those walls. It is a novel about the strength and radiance of human connection in wartime, and about a solidarity that transcends prejudice and upends the established ways of an entire community.
