La nebbia e il fuoco
Description:
Beneath the gray sky of Alessandria, the narrator encounters Gepi, an old friend who approaches him while pushing his bicycle. With the indifference typical of that city, Gepi recounts a long-forgotten story: Aldo—the beloved and highly respected high school English teacher—had been a member of the Resistance. "He was a hothead," Gepi continues. "Word has it he took part in an operation during which a colonel was killed—though it was only meant to be a symbolic action. Things turned out differently. Aldo was nineteen years old." For the narrator—who left Alessandria many years ago and has since become a writer and intellectual—this marks the beginning of a journey into memory, both historical and personal. In this anti-heroic city, seemingly devoid of any mysteries, the teacher’s past proves elusive. Was he truly part of that operation? It is impossible to reconstruct the facts with any certainty; yet, ultimately, what matters is not so much uncovering that specific truth as it is retracing the sites of memory to arrive at the memory of the places themselves.
