Description:
The first story, "The Ticklish Microphone," explores overcoming the fear of public speaking. At the start of a school term, one of the greatest challenges children face is expressing their opinions confidently and boldly in front of others. Sola, who is afraid of speaking in public, wishes for a "magic microphone" that could help her project her voice clearly and bravely. Hojun steps in to act as her microphone, but his help leads to an unexpected commotion. In the end, Sola takes a step forward on her own and completes her presentation using her own voice. The story conveys, in a lighthearted way, that "speaking up" is an exercise in the courage to reveal oneself--and that the experience of continuing to try is far more important than achieving perfection. The second story, "A Snip of the Hair," deals with the concept of "following rules." While rules are the foundation of communal life, for children, they can sometimes feel like a difficult choice that requires suppressing their own desires. Yeondu, a character in this story, cannot resist the urge to show her friends the slime she has made, so she sneaks it into school. After the slime gets tangled in her hair, Yeondu learns firsthand the consequences of her choices. She comes to realize, quite naturally, that following rules isn't about forced restraint, but rather about honoring the essential agreements that allow us to live together. Through these two stories, young readers gain a natural understanding of rules, responsibility, fear, and the act of taking on challenges. Without the need for heavy-handed instruction, children will find the strength to change from within, guided by laughter and empathy.
