Koch'ang nongmin Chon Pong-jung kwa ku ui adul Chon Yag-yong
Description:
Jeon Bong-jung is a counterfeit living in the present, imitating Jeon Bong-jun, while Jeon Yak-yong is a copycat, following Jeong Yak-yong. Jeon Bong-jung settles in Gochang County, North Jeolla Province—the hometown of General Nokdu, Jeon Bong-jun, who led the Donghak Peasant Revolution. Due to their similar names, he acts as if he were a modern-day hero and leads peasant protests. In reality, however, he is afraid to step forward. Just as Jeon Bong-jun led the revolution after reading Gyeongse Yupyō, a treatise written by Jeong Yak-yong to reform society, Jeon Bong-jung names his son Yak-yong. Although Jeon Yak-yong graduated from a top-tier university, he visits his father, weary of city life. Life in the countryside was not easy. Jeon Yak-yong eventually joins his father at the scene of protests. In the 1890s, the nation was shaken by corrupt politics, and the lives of ordinary people were bleak. Jeon Bong-jun, cultivating only three acres of land, was in a position where he did not necessarily need to step forward, yet he launched a revolution at the request of the farmers. How do farmers live today? Due to the instability of agricultural prices and the opening of foreign markets, incomes are significantly lower than in cities. As a result, young people have left, leaving only the elderly behind, making it a rare sight to hear a child crying. Young people who occasionally come to the countryside chasing ideals often find their lives crumbling due to excessive loans, fraud, and rural social issues, frequently leading to suicide. The past and the present are not much different. How will Jeon Bong-jung in the novel overcome this reality? Aren't you curious about the process of a counterfeit becoming the real thing? Through this novel, I hope you will understand the arduous lives of farmers and cheer them on.
