Purudaga nae ka chugul irum
Description:
Compared to the well-documented life of Han Yong-un (1879-1944)--who was born in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province, and was active primarily in the southern part of the peninsula--almost nothing is known about the life of Kim Sowol. This is a deeply regrettable state of affairs, likely stemming from the fact that he died prematurely at the age of thirty-three without ever really mingling with other literary figures or venturing to Seoul. After all, the life of the poet most beloved by our people cannot simply be glossed over with a few abstract statements. Perhaps sensing this lingering sense of loss--a void that seemed impossible to fill--Kim Sowol has traversed a century of time and space to come visit us in person. He has not merely stopped by in passing; he has come to us bringing the entirety of his life--carrying with him all the joys, sorrows, and tribulations that ceaselessly ebbed and flowed through his days. He lays it all bare: the misfortunes that befell his father and family, the tragic romance he shared with a young girl, and the harrowing reality of the Great Kanto Earthquake he witnessed during a brief stay in Tokyo--including the brutal violence the Japanese people inflicted upon our compatriots at that time.
