Ochita gishiki no kiroku
Description:
This is a record of rituals that are still secretly performed in settlements scattered throughout Japan. In the first record, "Takirai Settlement" in Tohoku, a rain-making ritual is performed in which men silently pass around a string of prayer beads while surrounding a young girl. After the ritual, the girl invariably disappears, and no one has ever returned. In the second record, "Takayama Settlement" in Shikoku, the taboo ritual "Ohachihiraki," which is performed to hear the voices of gods and Buddhas, is still being passed down. This act, which forcibly awakens spiritual power, is too dangerous and is forbidden, but it is said to still be continued in the settlement.
