Antologia brutalista
Description:
*Brutalist Anthology* is a book composed of five thematic blocks: "The Penal Code Annotated" (crime stories set in the underworld of Brazilian metropolises), "A Free, Just, and Solidarity-Based Society" (episodes from Brazil’s social war), "Pathos" (tales centered on the phenomenon of love), "Farce Followed by Tragedy" (stories with a historical basis), and "Metempsychosis" (narratives of supernatural horror). According to the literary school the author embraces—Brutalism, a radical deepening of 19th-century Naturalism—the modes of social organization and material production prevalent in Western societies are inherently criminal and predatory. Capitalism is, in essence, a metaphorical form of cannibalism, condemning those who live under its heel to anthropophagous practices—practices that do not always remain merely allegorical, as seen in the story "The Donor" and its subsequent developments. Yet, not everything in life is bleak, and Satan does not always win. Within these fifty exquisite narratives, the reader will also encounter healthy doses of humor, poetry, sincere love and devotion, and plausible triumphs for the ideal of justice. Perhaps this is the work’s most significant message: our times are harsh and somber, but they need not remain—and will not remain—harsh and somber forever.
