Description:

Another remarkable novel by one of the winners of the LeYa Prize. At the end of 1980, on the eve of presidential elections, a light plane crashes in Camarate shortly after taking off. It was followed, among others, by the head of the government of Portugal and its Minister of Defense, who died charred. With ten parliamentary commissions of inquiry, even today, more than four decades later, it is not known if it was an accident or an attack, and no one went to trial. At the same time, a group of radical revolutionaries created a terrorist organization known as FP-25, whose mission was to kill the "enemies of the people". Seventy-three defendants are tried, but only about thirty are convicted and – between amnesties and statutes of limitations – few are serving effective imprisonment. Meanwhile, in a village at the gates of Lisbon where not even another child is allowed to be born, a girl will mysteriously die shortly after giving birth. The newborn girl will end up in the lap of the mechanic of the crashed plane; and her biological father – a friend of the policeman who investigates the cases described – will search for this daughter for many years who will spend a good part of her childhood on top of a swing. These are the ends that are never truly tied in The Pendular Art of the Swing, an absolutely fascinating novel in which it is stated, not without some reason, that in Portugal there are never culprits.
